Domain names are somewhat similar to the
Web equivalent of brand names or identities. Your customers buy your
products and services, get support and make payments by finding your
company on the World Wide Web, by typing the domain name in the
familiar window bar on their web browser. It is also used to identify
where to route email destined for the domain owner. An appropriate name
will provide easy recall and navigation to ensure that they get to the
desired web address effortlessly. The infrastructure that enable this
is called the Domain Name System (DNS). Domain names are divided into 2
broad sets, Generic names, (eg. .com .info .biz ) are generally
available for any company or persons to register. Country specific
names (eg. Com.sg, com.hk and .us) tend to be restricted to country
domiciles and trademark holders. Of late many countries have opened up
registrations to everyone world wide. Domains are generally issued on a
first-come-first serve basis for a pre-defined period.
